This project takes on an interactive approach to eating. It has a focus on elderly patients that are recovering from strokes, but the design is universal for all people. The main feature of Palate is that patients are served on a rotating plate (similar to a lazy susan). It is especially helpful for those with recovering from strokes as they can turn the items of food closer to them. This allows them to use their hand with more mobility. This is done through hidden symbols at the bottom of the plate/bowls which you have to find/unlock once you have finished eating (the app detects this). The symbol relates to an interesting fact about the food item and animates a cartoon for the user on the iPad. This app also tracks and indicates the long term impacts, especially for the recovery of stroke patients. They will also be able to use the augmented reality feature on the app by picking up the iPad with both hands as they recover. We are basing the bathroom in the future where stress and anxiety levels are considerably greater than today, especially for high-class businessmen and women, who travel regularly and require hotel rooms. Goal: Our aim is to design a meditative bathroom space for these people in the future, drawing inspiration mainly from Japanese culture. We wanted to pay special attention to Japanese zen gardens. Zen gardens are ‘intended to imitate the intimate essence of nature, and to serve as an aid to meditation and peace of mind.’ Overview: We incorporated zen garden design forms through our integrated wall plants, rounded pebble-shaped bath, toilet, and sink, also with our Japanese fountain-inspired bath faucet. Lastly, the heated stone floor section.
