Reclaim Acoustic Tiles

Challenge: This project involved using recycled material to create soundproofing tiles for an office environment.

Goal: The aim was to make sure to find recycled material (newspaper) and tiles that damped sounds

Overview: I did my design based on a Poutama pattern which is a Maori step pattern that meets at the top and is symmetrical on both sides.

This is the design I came up with for Reclaim. It uses recycled newspaper and uses blue parts of the newspaper but other colours could be used too. The Poutama (step pattern) strips are held together by removable pins that can be reused. The Poutama pattern is also made clear through the use of negative space and when you step back from the wall it brings the pattern to life.

By using and choosing newspaper this was a suitable choice to help with acoustics and sound damping. This is because when folding the newspaper this way it became bouncy and was soft when pressed on due to the way the newspaper was stacked/placed.

The tiles can come as one square or a group of three so the set can be easily put up in someone’s office or house. It can be stuck on the wall using velcro.
